Just Summer

I am Summer! I wear many hats as a photographer, artist, business owner, and family cruise director. My favorites are coffee, politics and a good debate. I love my Geek; and I have a pretty interesting life. PS I am also an Atheist that thinks all people are inherantly good without religion.
I just found this on my niece’s get well page!!  Even though I’m an atheist and my sister is a devout christian, I do not remove comments off of the page no matter how upset they make me.  But at this time my sister is not in a good place, and I just want to remove this before she, or others, see this and actually think that this is going to do something to help.
I just worry about deleting it since my sister has made a comment to me before about leaving “Praise God!!!!!” out of one of the posts that I put up for her.  She told me that everyone thinks that she is the one writing the page, not me, but whatever. I just can’t let this be up there.
This is really starting to ware on me; to just sit here and not do anything proactive to keep the ignorance away from my sister and her family.  They can pray to their silly god, but please, oh please leave it up to the doctors and nurses to do their job and heal my niece.  Not some crack pot healing touch shit.  I’m just so frustrated right now!
What do I do??

Indiana Senate panel OKs creationism teaching bill

friendlyatheist:

reetodd:

An Indiana Senate panel has approved a bill that would allow creationism to be taught in Indiana’s public schools.

The Times of Munster reported that the Republican-controlled Senate Education Committee voted 8-2 Wednesday to send the legislation to the full Senate despite pleas from scientists and religious leaders to keep religion out of science classrooms.

The bill allows schools to authorize “the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life” and specifically mentions “creation science” as one such theory. Creationism is the belief that the Earth and its creatures were created by a deity.

Purdue University professor of chemistry John Staver told the panel evolution is the only theory of life’s origins that relies on scientific investigations. He says creationism “is unquestionably a statement of a specific religion.”

Further proof that the government refuses to play by its own rules.  There have been several cases at the federal appeals and Supreme Court level saying that creationism and “intelligent design” are not allowed to be taught in science classes.

LOL! Just wait for the lawsuit to be filed and for the state to be swatted out like a bug by the courts.

I learn something new everyday!

What did I learn today?  Don’t let your significant other run rampant on your blog.  You just might end up with a sad panda.

EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Presidential Candidate Buddy Roemer

Buddy Roemer is the first Republican candidate that I’m not hanging my head in shame at supporting. Not that political party matters. What matters is the needs and rights of the people. Not corporations! Once we can come together, us the 99%, and we vote our own candidate is when we’re going to see real change. I understand that there are important social issues like Roe V. Wade and gay marriage, and trust me those causes are near and dear to me. I think we first need to fight for us the 99%, and then work on social justice. There is no way to have any kind of justice in this country when a bunch of rich, old white men are at the helm.

I’m not saying to boycott these places or brands, but when your faith is written right there in the first paragraph of your mission statement, that’s going to make me think twice.

I would say boycott them.  Mission Statements should not have religion in them.

There is no reason to advertise your religion if you are a Corporation! They are not people and they do not have religions.

This is insanely idiotic, boycott these companies?? Every organization of any kind is started by individual human beings and they have the right to express their own views in that company.  It’s not your place to tell a business that their goods or services are not valid because they happen to mention a religious belief as part of their mission statement.  The word “mission” statement itself comes from religious routes.  Saying that you should boycott a company for having some religious leaning is like saying that you should ignore a child’s lemonade stand because the kid has a cross around their neck.  Henry Ford published in his company newspaper (a fairly widely read item it his time) that doing business with Jews would bring down the entire global economy and destroy any sense of order on the planet - I didn’t see Ford on that list by the way.  My point is this: a “boycott” of a company implies that some change in their business model must occur in order for them to regain your business - but these companies are not segregating or categorizing their clientele based on their missions, they are simply sharing with the world that they are firm in their own identities, which for some people, include more outspoken religious pride.  It’s one thing if these companies were supporting the Westboro Baptist Church or something absurd like that, but it’s exceptionally shameful and close-minded to suggest that someone who feels free in expressing their own viewpoints and using the company they started as a platform for sharing said opinions deserves to be boycotted.  Self expression is self expression, and even corporations are protected by the 1st amendment.

Dear self-proclaimed hipster dumbass. You show your ignorance or stupidity the jury is out. To make a distinction between a religious organization with a statement of the glory of god in their mission statement and the Westboro Baptist is dumb. They are all the same. They are all proselytizing just a degree of difference. No one is saying that these companies can’t have their god in their mission statements, I am saying that atheist who don’t want to support that message would do well to stay away from these places.

For someone who says they “love good debate,” you’re very quick to jump to some pretty serious insults of your peers, I’ll address “self proclaimed hipster” first: I assume you got this from my “about me” where the word hipster is qualified by the “dharma initiative” and all it references is a little joke about the show “lost.”  next item, “dumbass, ignorance, stupidity:” so, you love good debate, according to your tumblr page, and i’m wondering if outright insulting your fellow debaters is part of “good debate” to you.  If not, then this isn’t a good debate and your view, and I’m curious as to why you responded to me at all - also, FYI, my comments are in response to the comments in the post, where the most recent participant wrote that “mission statements should not have religion in them,”  (this is in response to your comment: “No one is saying that these companies can’t have their god in their mission statements”).  I love this conversation, but I think you need to know your audience, know your information, not be so quick to jump to conclusions about other participants, and consider your definition for what “good debate” is, because the minute that you start debating and try to make comments about your opponents in a debate (and not the information that’s being debated) your credibility crumbles to the ground.

Don’t be a sad panda!
